Biking against borders.

(verander via het menu van taalπŸ‘†)

hi! you’ve made your way to my website, welcome πŸ’–. since august 2024, i (seb, 24 years old) am cycling from Amsterdam to India. to get there, i cross around 25 borders. but wait, this is such a privilege, as my passport is among the strongest in the world. so why do you need sheer luck to be born into the right passport and have the freedom to see the world?

the answer lies in many places, but the core is: borders. so, while i’m biking for 2.5 years, i’ll learn about borders. why are they here? how do they work? and (how) can we get rid of them? and tell you about it. through this website, you can follow me. this is a travel blog having a baby with radical politics. welcome.

me (seb).

um, so.. any serious project starts with a biography, i think. the boy in the green jacket, laughing? that’s me! i’m a bus driver in Amsterdam who likes to bake bagels, climb things and read Ursula K. LeGuin.

i’ve been part of social movements since i started studying 5 years ago: protesting, speeching, organising & occupying. in those 5 years of being intensively political i’ve seen this country change. scapegoating marginalised groups has become ever more normalised, with migrants getting a particularly bad brunt of the stick.

now, if ever, is the time to fight back against inhumane and exclusionary politics. in a world that’s on fire, we must react with compassion. if we don’t, then what is the point of it all?

freedom to move

freedom to move

(my mom)

during the trip, i'll cross roughly 20 (!) borders. one such border: Afghanistan. i can enter and be received by the Afghan people with immense hospitality. yet i cannot legally receive an Afghani in my own tiny room: they aren’t allowed into the Netherlands.

MiGreat is a political and direct aid organisation based in Amsterdam that fights against borders, racism and xenophobia. No Name Kitchen helps people on the move across Europe trying to cross borders. Both organisations work for the freedom to move for everyone.

while i bike, we raise money with a sort of sponsoring system.
check it out and support these 2 organisations?πŸ‘‡
